About Ujjayanta Palace & State Museum
Ujjayanta Palace is the most iconic landmark of Tripura and one of the finest royal palaces in Northeast India. Constructed between 1899 and 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya, the magnificent palace served as the royal residence of the Manikya dynasty before later becoming the Tripura Legislative Assembly. Today, it houses the Tripura State Museum, showcasing the rich history, culture, traditions, tribal heritage, archaeology, sculptures, coins, textiles, paintings, and royal artifacts of Tripura and the Northeast.
Designed by the renowned Martin & Burn Company, the palace is an architectural masterpiece blending Mughal, Indo-Saracenic, and European styles. The grand white domes, elegant corridors, beautifully landscaped Mughal gardens, fountains, lakes, and ornate interiors make it one of the most photographed attractions in Tripura. Named “Ujjayanta” by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the palace stands as a symbol of Tripura’s royal legacy and cultural pride.
